Thousands Lost Power in South-East Queensland and Victoria Following Intense Storms

Around twenty-five thousand homes in south-east Queensland were left without power on Monday's dawn after severe thunderstorms swept through the state, bringing powerful gusts reaching over 100 km/h.

Substantial Frozen Precipitation and Widespread Impact

Homeowners observed substantial frozen pellets as large as 7 centimeters in some areas. Meteorological experts verified that various areas across Queensland had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Utility workers were attempting to repair power throughout the damaged zones, with nearly 70 crews working to manage the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victorian Storm Challenges

At the same time, around 1,000 residents in Victoria also experienced energy failures after Melbourne recorded its wettest day in over 500 days.

Rescue organizations responded to 598 calls for help across the region, mostly for property damage but also for collapsed vegetation and inundation.

During the peak on Sunday, in excess of twenty-eight thousand electricity consumers in the state were lacking electricity.

Meteorological Predictions

Damp conditions were predicted to continue along much of eastern Queensland this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

Tuesday was predicted as the wettest day, with ongoing storm activity expected across multiple regions of both regions.

Health Warning

Health officials warned that there was an greater possibility of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the state's northern country region, particularly given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This warning comes after previous incidents where similar conditions led to substantial respiratory problems in the state.
