At least 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who are known at this time.
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
