The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files associated with the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by the president and his Republican allies. The White House gave in after an extended period of trying to block the bipartisan effort involving a scandal that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.
Expedited Approval in Congress
Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, expediting the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.
Citizens have endured sufficient delay. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader said in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”
Presidential Signature
The bill next goes to Trump for his signature. Trump signaled on Monday that he would approve the bill.
Even though the president has for an extended period rejected the outcry over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the measure over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it comes to him.
Response
Democrats, along with those affected and their advocates who were watching from a public section, broke into applause after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who said he was concerned the measure would reveal personal information of people, persons of interest and others implicated in the investigation.
