Fury Explodes as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Backlash

Individuals from across the partisan aisle and the Hollywood world are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". The message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Developments and Arrest

Authorities have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant sum.

A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures

The response to Trump's words was swift and harsh.

“What a vile and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the remarks. She referenced prior comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any worse?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from Within Political Ranks

A number of Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.

Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly dared members in his political party to justify the comments.

The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."

Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally after the shooting of a different individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
