Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Content That Sparked the Controversy

The clip, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who in the past worked in military or defense roles.

"Similar to us, you all took an oath to protect and support this constitution," the representatives declared in the brief video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our statutes are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can refuse unlawful commands, you must reject improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the law or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Furious Response

The recorded statement appeared to trigger a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their statements cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Respond

Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership published a joint announcement condemning the statements.

"Partisan aggression has no role in America," they wrote. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our United States with exceptional national pride and excellence. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical social media posts and retract his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the declaration continued.

Lawmakers' Firm Answer

The representatives who participated in the video also released a statement.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and national security professionals who value this country and swore an vow to safeguard and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No threat, pressure, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they continued. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they execute their pledge to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They continued: "All citizens must join forces and denounce the president's demands for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a period for moral clarity."

Further Partisan Responses

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the execution of government members."

He added: "This represents an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should condemn this without delay and absolutely."

The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of the government telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that's without precedent in US history."

The GOP official also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the wording and determine all that."

White House Reaction

During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Does the president want to kill members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the representative declared. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to organize a recorded statement to individuals of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She stated: "The sanctity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
