California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a well-known Democratic figure, has indicated that he plans to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections conclude.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom commented when asked about giving serious thought to a presidential run after the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

The governor's current term as California's leader wraps up in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he emphasized that any choice is not imminent.

"Fate will determine that," he added.

Rising Profile as a Trump Critic

The California governor has emerged as a prominent opponent of the former president's team, employing his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would expand Democratic House seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on a major news network. The secretary disclosed a strategy to cut federal funds from California and warned eliminating the state's ability to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," he said, after a recently reported tragic collision in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that led to three deaths and injured individuals.

His administration pointed out that the federal government had renewed the worker's status multiple times, which permitted him to receive a CDL under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was holding back additional funds from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a last month's comment countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: The state's truck drivers had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects

A recent study revealed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom must consider running for president in 2028. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has increased to an typical level of about one-third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has dropped from an average of over 40% to current figures.

Some time ago, the governor stated while visiting several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.

He mentioned his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The thought that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the American people."
