Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
